Will prefilled syringes save hospitals money?
It seems so. A study in the Netherlands calculated the annual costs of >864,000 parenteral administrations in one hospital [8]. Three scenarios were analysed (see Table); there was a 71% cost saving if prefilled syringes were used in all cases versus conventionally prepared medications. The costs were strongly influenced by the decreased risk of medication errors and bacterial contamination with prefilled syringes, showing the importance of taking these into account when assessing implementation costs. Applying such savings to the NHS costs for medication administration in anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine would represent a very significant saving.
