Will prefilled syringes stop me picking up the wrong syringe?
No; anaesthetists will always have to remain vigilant and read syringe labels. However the aim of this and other safety systems is to reduce the chances of error, rather than to give a false sense of security that errors can be eliminated. Consistent labelling and standardised syringe appearance should reduce cognitive load, and potentially therefore a wrong syringe error.
Electronic systems using syringe bar codes and scanners can help here but cannot be 100% effective if syringes are filled and labelled manually. Providing anaesthetic medications in prefilled syringes is an essential step towards developing and making such systems robust.
